Editor's Review

Genealogy used to mean a shoebox of certificates, a notebook, and a weekend booked at a county archive. Ancestry moved most of that indoors, and this app is the pocket-sized front end to it: your tree, the record collections and your DNA results, all reachable while you are standing in a relative's kitchen asking who the man in the photograph is.

The tree builder is the core. You add people, relationships, dates and places, and the service starts throwing hints at you: a census entry, a passenger list, a parish record that appears to match someone you already entered. Accepting a hint attaches the source document to that person, which is the habit separating a researched tree from a guessed one. Photographs, scanned documents and recorded stories can hang off any profile, so oral history from an elderly relative does not stay trapped on a voice recorder.

If you have taken an AncestryDNA test, the app shows the ethnicity estimate and, more usefully, the list of people whose DNA overlaps yours with an estimate of how closely you are related. Messaging those matches from the phone is often how a stalled line finally moves.

The honest caveat is money. The app is free and so is building a tree, but the record collections that make hints worth anything sit behind an Ancestry subscription, and a DNA test is a separate physical purchase. Large trees are also awkward here; panning six generations around a small screen is a compromise, and serious editing sessions still belong on a desktop. A 4.62 average, on 10M+ installs, fits an app doing one specialised job well for people already invested in the service.

Features

Pros

  • The hint system turns vague family stories into sourced documents

  • DNA matches and tree research live in the same place

  • Adding people and photos during a family visit is genuinely practical

Cons

  • Most record collections require a paid Ancestry subscription

  • A DNA test is a separate physical kit the app does not provide

  • Big trees feel cramped and are better edited on a desktop

Questions people ask

Do I need a paid subscription to use the app?

No. Building and viewing a family tree is free. The historical record collections behind the hints are the paid part, so without a subscription you can enter what you already know but will meet a paywall when you try to open most suggested documents.

Does the app include a DNA test?

No. AncestryDNA is a separate saliva kit you buy and post back. Once results are processed they appear alongside your tree, but nothing in the app itself analyses DNA.

Can relatives work on the same tree?

Yes. Trees can be shared with invited people, with control over who may view and who may edit. That is the usual way cousins pool research instead of each rebuilding the same branches.
