OpenAI's assistant reached Android after the web version had already changed how many people write a first draft, and this is a full client rather than a trimmed companion. Chats sync with the same account used in a browser, so a conversation started on a laptop continues on the phone.
What it does well, roughly in order: rewriting and shortening text, explaining an unfamiliar subject at whatever level you ask for, drafting emails and outlines, working through code and error messages, translating, and summarising a document you paste or upload. Voice mode makes it something you can talk to hands-free, and camera or gallery input lets you ask about a photo, a screenshot or a page of handwriting.
The honest weaknesses are the familiar ones. It states wrong things fluently, and the more obscure the subject the likelier that becomes, so anything factual needs checking against a source. It cannot work offline. The free tier reaches capable models but throttles the strongest ones and the heavier features, with the paid subscription loosening those limits, which means the app you install and the app you end up relying on may not be the same product.
Privacy deserves a sentence too: conversations may be used to improve the models unless that is switched off in the data controls, and doing so is worth a minute before pasting anything sensitive.
None of that has slowed adoption. A 4.77 rating over 1B+ installs sits near the ceiling for an app this widely used, and the reason is simple enough. For a large set of everyday tasks it is faster than the alternative, and it costs nothing to try.
