Editor's Review

This is companion software, and that classification carries a warning: without a Bose product in the room the app does nothing whatsoever. With one, it is how you get the hardware configured and how you reach settings that no button on the device itself exposes.

What it controls:

Initial pairing and network setup for speakers and soundbars, firmware updates, equaliser adjustment, noise-cancellation levels on headphones that support them, saved shortcut presets, multi-room grouping across compatible speakers, and streaming service links so a speaker can play without your phone in the chain. Newer models expose far more of this than older ones, and which screens you see depends entirely on what you own.

Why the score sits at 3.78:

Two themes run through the negative reviews. The first is the migration away from the older Bose Connect and SoundTouch apps, which left owners of long-serving products in an awkward place where the newer app supports their device partially or not at all. The second is reliability: dropped connections, devices vanishing from the list, and firmware updates that fail partway and need repeating. When it behaves it is unobtrusive, which is the correct goal for this kind of app, but the path there is bumpier than a hardware brand at this price ought to allow.

Features

  • Guided setup and network pairing for speakers and soundbars

  • Firmware updates delivered to the connected product

  • Equaliser and noise-cancellation controls where hardware supports them

  • Multi-room grouping across compatible speakers

  • Shortcut presets and linked streaming service accounts

Pros

  • The only route to firmware updates and hidden settings

  • Grouping several speakers is straightforward once they are added

  • Costs nothing on top of the hardware

Cons

  • Worthless without a compatible Bose product

  • Devices from the Connect and SoundTouch era are poorly served

  • Dropped connections and disappearing devices are common complaints

  • Available controls differ so much by model that guides rarely match your screen
