Editor's Review

Germany's public broadcasting consortium puts its television output here: news, regional programming, documentaries, crime series, films and the live streams of Das Erste alongside the regional channels. ARD Mediathek is the catch-up service for all of it, paid for through the household broadcasting contribution rather than by advertising or a subscription.

What you get: full episodes of ARD productions, live channel streams, a documentary and reportage section that is genuinely deep, subtitles across much of the catalogue, offline downloads on titles where rights allow, and casting to a television. There is no paywall and no sign-in requirement for most content, which by itself puts it ahead of many commercial rivals.

Why the score sits at 3.2: most of the complaints are structural rather than cosmetic. The majority of programmes are geo-restricted to Germany, so the app is close to useless abroad. Titles also expire, because public broadcasters must pull much of their output once an availability window closes, and a series you started can vanish before you finish it. The client itself has drawn steady criticism for playback stalls, forgotten viewing positions and a redesign that regular viewers disliked.

For anyone in Germany already paying the licence fee it remains the natural way to watch ARD content, and the documentary archive rewards browsing. Expect the polish of a public service, not of a commercial streaming app.

  • Documentary and reportage section with a deep back catalogue

  • Subtitles on a large part of the library

  • Offline downloads on titles where rights permit it

  • Casting to a television or streaming stick

Pros

  • No subscription, no purchase and no advertising breaks

  • News, regional output and documentaries gathered in one library

  • Much of the catalogue carries subtitles

Cons

  • A 3.2 average reflects real dissatisfaction with the app rather than the programming

Questions people ask

Can I watch outside Germany?

Mostly no. Rights for the bulk of the catalogue are limited to Germany, so playback fails abroad. A small number of ARD's own productions remain available internationally.

Is there a subscription or advertising?

Neither. The service is financed through Germany's household broadcasting contribution, so nothing is sold inside the app and programmes are not interrupted by adverts.

Why did a series disappear?

Public broadcasters may only keep most content online for a limited period. Once that window closes the title is withdrawn, which is why long viewing plans get interrupted.
