Editor's Review

Unknown numbers are the reason apps like this exist, and CallApp has built one of the larger community-sourced caller databases to answer them. It replaces the stock dialler and contacts screen rather than sitting quietly beside them, which is worth knowing before you install.

What it identifies:

Incoming calls surface a name, a photo and often a business category before you pick up. Numbers reported repeatedly as nuisance calls get marked automatically, and the app can reject them silently. A reverse lookup covers numbers that have already rung you, and a personal block list handles individual contacts you never want to hear from.

Beyond caller ID:

CallApp folds in call recording, contact backup, call history with reminders, and social profile photos pulled onto contact cards. That breadth explains the hundred million installs, and it also explains the permission list: contacts, call log, phone, microphone and storage are all requested, and the identification database improves partly because users share their address books with it.

The catch:

The free version carries advertising in places you would rather it did not, including after a call ends. A premium tier removes those and unlocks extras. Recording is the least dependable feature, because Android has tightened what third-party apps may capture, and results vary by handset, region and OS version whatever the listing promises. A 4.28 average is respectable for the category but reflects genuine irritation about ads and about identifications that are occasionally wrong or out of date.

Features

  • Caller ID for numbers that are not in your address book

  • Automatic flagging of numbers widely reported as nuisance calls

  • Reverse lookup for any number that has already rung you

  • Replacement dialler and contacts interface

  • Call recording where the handset and local law allow it

  • Contact backup so your list survives a phone change

  • Personal block list for specific numbers and prefixes

  • Call reminders and notes attached to each contact card

Pros

  • A large crowd-sourced database catches plenty of unwanted calls

  • Identification and blocking work with no setup beyond permissions

  • The free tier is genuinely usable rather than a short trial

Cons

  • Requests broad access to contacts, call log and microphone

  • Advertising appears after calls unless you pay

  • Recording behaviour is unreliable on newer Android releases

  • Some names are wrong or stale, since the data comes from users

Questions people ask

Does CallApp use my contacts?

The service builds its identification database partly from user address books, which is how it names numbers no phone company ever labelled. Read the permission prompts and the privacy policy before agreeing if that trade-off bothers you.

Is call recording guaranteed to work?

No. Google has restricted recording access for third-party apps, so whether it functions depends on your handset, your Android version and the law where you live. Treat it as a bonus, not a reason to install.

Do I have to pay?

The download is free and the main screening features cost nothing. A paid tier strips out advertising and adds extras on top of the basics.
