A browser, not just a search box:
DuckDuckGo began as a search engine that kept no record of queries, and the Android app has grown well past that. It is a full browser with the private search built in, tracker blocking that runs on every site rather than only on results pages, and enforced encryption wherever a site supports it. The Fire Button is the signature move: one tap closes every tab and wipes the browsing data behind them, with no dialogue asking whether you meant it.
What it blocks:
Third-party trackers are stopped before they load, and the app names the companies it blocked on each page, which beats a silent shield. App Tracking Protection extends the same treatment to other apps on the device. Email Protection issues a forwarding address that strips trackers out of messages before they reach your real inbox. Duck.ai, the optional chat feature, passes prompts to third-party models without attaching your identity, and can be switched off entirely.
The trade-offs:
Results come largely from Bing with DuckDuckGo's own layer on top, and on obscure or highly local queries they are noticeably thinner than Google's. Blocking breaks a small number of sites, usually payment or login flows, so a second browser stays useful for the ones that misbehave. Sync works but is deliberately minimal next to a Google or Apple account, since holding your data centrally is the thing being avoided. None of that dents a 4.69 rating across more than fifty million installs, which is remarkable for a browser nobody preinstalls.
