Companion apps for mesh routers are judged on a single evening: the one where the hardware comes out of the box. eero's holds a 4.81 average across five million installs, which for router software is close to unheard of, and it is earned almost entirely in that first half hour. Scan the barcode, name the network, carry the second node to another room, and the app talks you through placement instead of leaving you to guess.
Day-to-day use: a device list with names you can edit, per-device internet pause, a guest network shareable by link or QR code, speed tests run from the gateway unit, and firmware updates that install themselves overnight. Profiles group one family member's devices so a schedule applies to all of them at once.
The catch, twice over: the app is worthless without eero hardware in the house, and a portion of what looks like built-in functionality belongs to eero's paid subscription tier rather than the box you bought. Content filtering, ad blocking and security scanning live there. Advanced networking is deliberately thin as well, which is the trade the whole product makes: simplicity in exchange for the controls a router enthusiast would want to reach.
