Editor's Review

Designveloper's Eye test is a small self-check tool: a handful of on-screen charts covering visual acuity, colour perception and astigmatism, run at arm's length with instructions displayed alongside. It is the kind of thing people reach for after a long day in front of a monitor, when their eyes feel worse than usual.

Taken for what it is, it is fine. The tests are quick, the results are legible, and a poor score can nudge someone into booking a real appointment. Taken as a diagnosis, it is not fine at all. The app cannot control the two variables that decide everything: how large your screen is and how far away you hold it. Set either carelessly and the numbers mean nothing.

The listing is also priced rather than free, which for a 4.06-rated utility in a category crowded with free alternatives is a real hurdle. Buy it only if this particular set of tests is the one you want.

Features

  • Visual acuity charts scaled to the device screen

  • Colour vision plates for red-green perception

  • Astigmatism checks using radial line patterns

  • On-screen guidance covering viewing distance and conditions

Pros

  • Quick way to notice a change worth showing to a professional

  • Runs entirely on the device with no account needed

Cons

  • Paid listing in a category where free alternatives exist

  • Accuracy depends on the screen size and distance you set yourself

  • Results carry no clinical weight whatsoever

  • A 4.06 average is modest for something you have to buy

Questions people ask

Can this replace an eye exam?

No. It is a rough self-check. An optometrist measures things a phone cannot, including eye health rather than only sharpness.

Why does it cost money?

The listing is priced rather than free or ad-supported. Since several free vision-check apps exist, that price is the main thing to weigh first.

How accurate are the results?

Only as accurate as your setup. Screen size, brightness and holding distance all shift the outcome, so treat any result as a hint rather than a measurement.
