Editor's Review

Charging away from home turns on two questions: is there a working stall nearby, and will it take payment without a fight. EVgo's driver app is built around both. It maps the company's own fast-charging network across the United States, shows which stalls at a site are free, busy or out of service, and lets a driver open a session from the handset instead of hunting for a network access card.

Payment sits inside the account. You add a card once, pick a plan, and sessions bill automatically; the app keeps a record of what each stop cost and how much energy it delivered. Autocharge+ goes further on supported vehicles, recognising the car when it plugs in so charging starts without touching anything. Filters for connector type matter here, because a CCS stall is no use to a CHAdeMO car and the app is clear about which is which.

The limits are the ones any operator app carries. It shows EVgo sites only, so it complements a route planner instead of replacing one, and it has nothing to offer outside the network's US footprint. Station status is only as good as the reporting coming back from the hardware, and a stall marked available can still refuse to start. Anyone who charges regularly on this network will keep it on the home screen anyway, because the alternative is a card reader and a phone number on a sticker.

Features

  • Map of EVgo fast-charging locations with filters for connector type and power

  • Stall-level availability showing which chargers are occupied or offline

  • Remote start, live progress and session shutdown, all from the handset

  • Stored payment card with automatic billing and a per-session cost record

  • Autocharge+ enrolment so supported cars begin charging on plug-in

  • Charging plan selection and account management inside the app

Pros

  • No plastic charge card to carry or lose at the stall

  • Stall status saves a detour to a site that is already full

  • Session records make charging costs easy to track over time

  • Free to install, with no fee for the app itself

Cons

  • Covers EVgo sites only, so route planning needs a second app

  • No use outside the network's United States coverage area

  • Reported charger status can lag the real state of the hardware

Questions people ask

Do I need an account to use the app?

Yes. The map can be browsed without one, but starting a session requires a registered account with a payment method attached, because billing runs through the app rather than the charger.

Does it work with chargers from other networks?

No. It covers EVgo's own stations. Drivers who move between networks usually keep an aggregator or a route planner alongside it.

What is Autocharge+?

An opt-in feature that links a supported vehicle to your account so the charger recognises it on plug-in and begins charging automatically, without opening the app.
