Card apps are judged on how quickly they answer two questions: what have I spent, and what do I owe. This one puts both on the opening screen, which is a large part of why it holds a 4.5 rating across more than a million installs.
Past the balance, it covers the routine account admin that used to mean a telephone call. Recent and pending transactions are listed with merchant detail, statements go back through previous months, and payments can be made immediately or scheduled from a linked bank account. Membership Rewards points appear with their redemption options, and offers can be added to the card in a tap so a statement credit applies automatically when you spend at the retailer.
Security makes up the other half. A card can be frozen and unfrozen instantly when one goes missing, spending alerts arrive as push notifications, and the app is the usual place to approve an online purchase when a merchant triggers an extra identity check.
The boundaries matter. This is not a general banking app and not a global Amex app: it serves UK-issued accounts, so cardmembers elsewhere need the edition for their own market. It does nothing at all without an existing card and a registered online account, and a handful of servicing tasks still push you out to the website or the phone line.

Questions people ask
Will it work with a card issued in another country?
No. This edition is built for UK-issued accounts, and signing in with a card from another market will fail. American Express publishes separate apps per region.
Do I need to register online first?
Yes. The app signs you into an existing online account, so set that up with your card details if you have never registered before.
Can business cardmembers use it?
UK business cardmembers can generally sign in with the same credentials, although which features appear depends on the product and on what the account administrator permits.
