Editor's Review

Bank apps are judged on a short list of chores, and how gracefully they handle them decides whether customers tolerate the thing or complain about it every week. Alior Mobile is the Android front end for Alior Bank, one of Poland's larger retail banks, and it covers that list in full.

Balances and transaction history open on the first screen, with domestic transfers, saved recipients and scheduled payments a tap behind. BLIK is present, which in Poland is not a bonus but the payment method half of online checkouts expect, along with the short codes that pull cash from an ATM without a card. Cards can be frozen, released and limited from the phone, and operations that once waited on an SMS are confirmed with in-app authorisation instead. Currency accounts, exchange between them, and applications for further products fill out the rest.

The obvious condition is that none of this exists without an Alior account. There is nothing to evaluate before you become a customer, which makes the app less a choice than a consequence of one. It is also built squarely for the Polish market, in Polish, with support arranged to match.

The rating deserves attention. At 3.92 this sits below where Polish mobile banking has generally settled, and a score like that on software people are obliged to use points at friction rather than missing features. Banks in this bracket also enforce device security strictly, so modified or rooted handsets are frequently refused outright.

Features

  • Balances and transaction history across personal and savings accounts

  • Domestic transfers with saved recipients and scheduled payments

  • BLIK codes for online checkout and cardless ATM withdrawals

  • Freezing, releasing and limit setting on payment cards

  • In-app authorisation of operations in place of SMS codes

  • Currency accounts with exchange between them

  • Applications for further bank products without a branch visit

Pros

  • BLIK support covers the payment method Polish shops actually ask for

  • In-app authorisation removes the wait for a text message

  • Losing a wallet becomes a two-tap problem rather than a phone call

Cons

  • Worthless without an existing Alior Bank account, so there is nothing to trial

  • A 3.92 average is weak for software most customers have no alternative to

  • Polish market and Polish language throughout

  • Device security rules block installation or login on modified phones

Questions people ask

Can I use it without being an Alior Bank customer?

No. The app is a front end to an existing account and there is no guest or demo mode, so it is only worth installing once the account exists.

What is BLIK and why does the app make so much of it?

BLIK is the shared Polish mobile payment standard. The app generates a short code you paste into an online checkout or type at a cash machine, which is why it appears so prominently in a Polish banking app and would look odd in one built elsewhere.

Does it work when I travel abroad?

The banking functions work anywhere with a connection, but the product range, the interface language and the support behind it are built for customers based in Poland.
