Editor's Review

CoinGecko was a reference point for crypto market data long before the mobile app existed, and the Android version is essentially that database made portable: prices, market capitalisation, trading volume, supply figures and exchange listings for thousands of coins and tokens.

Portfolio tracking: Holdings are logged by hand, then total value, profit and loss and allocation update against live prices. This is a tracker, not a wallet. No funds pass through it and there are no keys to protect, which removes an entire category of risk but also means you are typing figures in yourself.

Beyond price: The app carries the parts of the website people actually use, including candlestick charts, historical data, trending coins, category breakdowns such as layer-one or gaming tokens, and news headlines. Alerts push a notification when a coin crosses a threshold you set.

The weak spots deserve naming. Sheer data volume makes the interface dense on a phone, and newcomers can find the number of tabs and metrics off-putting. Manual portfolio entry turns into a chore if you trade often. And as with any aggregator, a listing is not an endorsement; obscure tokens sit alongside major assets with no quality filter, so the app tells you what a market is doing, never whether it is worth touching.

For tracking rather than trading, it remains one of the more trustworthy free options, and it holds a 4.66 rating on Google Play.

Features

  • Live prices and market data for thousands of coins and tokens

  • Portfolio tracker showing profit and loss, allocation and total value

  • Customisable price alerts delivered as push notifications

  • Candlestick charts with historical price and volume data

  • Exchange listings and trading pairs for each asset

  • Category and trending views for spotting where money is moving

  • Watchlists and crypto news headlines in a single feed

Pros

  • Broad, independent market data at no cost

  • Read-only by design, so no wallet keys are ever exposed

  • Alerts can be set per coin and per price threshold

  • Watchlists carry over from the web account

Cons

  • The interface is dense and takes time to learn

  • Manual portfolio entry becomes tedious for active traders

  • A token appearing in the listings says nothing about its safety

Questions people ask

Is CoinGecko a wallet or an exchange?

Neither. It tracks market data and records the holdings you enter, but you cannot buy, sell or store crypto through it.

Do I need an account?

Browsing prices and charts works without one. An account is needed to sync watchlists, portfolios and alerts between devices.

Does the app cost money?

No. CoinGecko sells paid API plans to developers, but the consumer app itself does not require a subscription.
