Editor's Review

Day-to-day banking on a phone comes down to three things: seeing the balance, moving money, and approving what you moved without fetching a second device. Commerzbank's client covers all three, and its 4.69 average on Google Play is unusually strong for a German banking app — most of that field sits closer to the middle of the scale.

The everyday side. Accounts, card transactions and standing orders appear together, transfers run over SEPA with saved beneficiaries, and recurring payments can be created or cancelled from the phone instead of a branch. A card can be blocked directly, which matters at precisely the moment you cannot reach a computer.

Security. Approval goes through photoTAN, the bank's own procedure. It lives either in a separate photoTAN app or on a dedicated reader, and that two-part arrangement draws most of the complaints: it is sound, but it is an extra step and an extra install. Biometric unlock is available for opening the banking app itself.

Beyond payments. Securities holdings are reachable from the same login, so investments sit next to the current account rather than in a separate tool, and push messages cover incoming payments and card use.

The constraint is straightforward. None of it is usable without a Commerzbank account, and everything assumes German banking conventions — IBAN transfers, SEPA direct debits, photoTAN. As a tool for existing customers it is well built and clearly maintained. For anyone else it is a locked door.

Features

  • Balances and transaction history across current and savings accounts

  • SEPA transfers with saved beneficiaries

  • Create, amend or cancel standing orders

  • photoTAN approval for payments and logins

  • Block a card without calling the bank

  • Securities holdings visible under the same login

  • Push alerts for incoming payments and card activity

Pros

  • One of the better-rated German banking apps at 4.69

  • Banking and investments behind a single sign-in

  • A lost card can be blocked immediately from the phone

  • Biometric unlock avoids retyping the PIN all day

Cons

  • photoTAN normally means a second app or a physical reader

  • Nothing here works without an existing Commerzbank account

  • Built around German banking procedure, which narrows its usefulness elsewhere

Questions people ask

Do I need a Commerzbank account?

Yes. This is a client for existing Commerzbank customers and cannot be pointed at accounts held at another bank.

What is photoTAN?

It is Commerzbank's approval procedure. A coloured graphic shown during a transaction is read by a separate photoTAN app or by a dedicated reader, which returns the code that confirms the payment.

Can I open an account from the app?

The app is for managing accounts you already hold. Opening a new one runs through Commerzbank's own onboarding, not through this client.
